Focus Like a Gold Medal Olympian to Get What You Want

Focus Like a Gold Medal Olympian

It's time to go for the Gold, follow your dreams!

bull's eyeI know that you want to focus on feeling good, healthy and radiant in your body and that you also want to lead an extraordinary life of fun, freedom and balance. You can! The number one way to realize all of this is to focus like an Olympic Gold medalist! Focus is everything. Like an arrow to the bull's eye the more you focus the more successful you will become.

Following is an eight step way to pave your way to the life and body of your dreams!

1. The first step in achieving any goal is to identify what you want. This can be the hardest part of getting started because you are blessed with countless choices and ideas. The best way to identify what you want is to listen to your intuition (your heart or gut feeling.) Then make a list of all of your options. Next create a pros and cons list for each choice. Seeing it all on paper helps but it may confuse you even more, if confusion is the case and clarity is not coming then take your mind elsewhere for the night. If it suits you try "turning your choice over" to your Angels and Guides while you sleep. You can imagine placing your questions in the palms of your loving Angels and watching them gracefully take them from you. You'll wake up in the morning refreshed and clearer on which direction to take.

girl friends2. Determination is the second step in realizing your dreams. Allow nothing to steal your peace or get in the way of your dreams. Share your dreams with your closest friend or health counselor, someone who believes in you and knows you can do anything you put your mind to. Keep your eyes on the prize and don't look left or right! Focus on your target and you will make your mark!

3. The next step is commitment. Stay diligently committed to your goal for an allotted amount of time. If your goal is to lose 10 pounds give yourself a reasonable, healthy and realistic time frame. Mark the date on your calendar and focus on that date. Have unwavering, unshakeable faith that you will make your mark.

4. Pay consistent, daily, focused attention to your goal. You can do this by visualizing your success for several minutes each day, or by actually doing something which will bring you closer to your dreams.

5. Track your progress in your calendar, journal or computer. Each day take note of your successes and challenges in meeting your goal. Then make a plan to focus harder tomorrow or to ease up on yourself a little bit. Remember to love yourself up, everyday!

6. Believe in yourself by using positive affirmations, visualization, meditation, prayer and by surrounding yourself with uplifting, supportive friends who inspire you but more importantly believe in you. See the light in all beings.

7. Read or listen to books, autobiographies and true stories of other humans who have paved the way before you through realizing their dreams. Inspirational success stories can lift you up and bring you closer to your goals.

8. Lastly never give up on your dreams! Fall down a thousand times, get back up a thousand and one times! You can do it!

Are You Getting Enough Sleep?

Hello There,

I'm just writing to ask if you are getting enough sleep these last few hot days of summer. Sleep is so good for you! The more rested you feel the less sugar and caffeine you crave.

Each of us require different amounts of sleep. Try slowing down a little bit and listening to your body. If you feel tired take a 20 minute power nap to rejuvenate you to your best self!

If you are familiar with yoga asanas (poses) then try child's pose or in Bikram Yoga we call it half tortoise pose to rest your central nervous system and to regulate sleep and wake cycles. Remember to breathe deeply and completely when you are in any yoga pose.

I do half tortoise pose in the afternoon when I feel the 3 o'clock slump rather than getting jacked up on sugar or caffeine. Give it a try the next time your energy dips, you'll be surprised how well your body responds to the love and self care.

Summer Beet Salad with Arugula and Lemon Ginger Dressing

Just give me a beet! Last week I picked up some delicious beets and sunflower sprouts at my local farmers market, came home and whipped this up for Johnn and I! I love the beautiful red and golden color of beets. I like to imagine beets cleansing my blood and pulling out toxins when I eat them. I got this recipe at www.wholefoodsmarket.com

Serves 4

  • 4 red beets (2-inch size)
  • 4 golden beets (2-inch size)
  • 1/4 pound baby arugula
  • 1 cup sunflower sprouts
  • 1 cup mung bean sprouts
  • 1 teaspoon black sesame seeds (or regular)

  • Dressing

  • 1 tablespoon ginger, minced
  • 1 green onion top, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 teaspoon lemon zest
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup canola oil
  • 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar

Wash beets. Steam or boil the 2 colors of beets in separate pots (to retain colors); cook until tender (up to 40 minutes), chill. Place all dressing ingredients in a blender, purée. Peel chilled beets, slice thinly. Divide arugula on 4 salad plates. Alternating colors, overlap beets in a ring around the arugula. Place sprouts in the center of the ring and top with sesame seeds. Drizzle with dressing.

Bless and Enjoy to the fullest!

Personal Note from Amanda

I am so happy because I woke up and went on a beautiful hike in the mountains before teaching yoga this morning. My baby belly is growing and I swear I had a big growth spurt last night. I love being pregnant even though I am busting out of my shorts and my belly is peaking out under my tops! I find it more comfortable to wear less these days!

Our baby is due in mid December.  I am trying to wrap my brain around how I am going to be a mom and continue my radiant health coaching practice. I love my work so much because I get to work with women who really want to transform themselves into their highest and best versions of themselves.

I really want to share more on my blog pre baby but I feel like now that I am pregnant that I can't relate or more importantly really inspire you as much as I once did, because everything is so new and different with me. I used to teach and write based on my life experiences and trials and tribulations with food, body image, sugar and self care. Now I feel so different and not the same at all so I have a hard time relating to my audience. Does this make sense?

Maybe the solution is to just be me, after all I am evolving and transforming into a new being and maybe this experience will inspire you? I miss writing and sharing with you. My hope is that just by writing I will get my voice and inspiration back.

My other thoughts are to prewrite a bunch of articles for my ezine and blog for when our little miracle baby pops out so that I can stay connected with you. I have no idea what being a mom and having a baby is going to be like! It's as if I read in the paper that there was a huge tornado about to hit my house  and that I better prepare now in order to survive! I keep trying to remind myself to relax into the present moment and trust that all will be revealed when the time is right but the little squirrel in me can't help but to prepare my nest as much as possible before the tornado hits!

It feels good to write to you so informally and to just be me! Thank you for allowing me to grow, transform and evolve into GOD knows what!

I hope to keep the energy flowing from me to you and to dance in the mystery of life.

If you are a mom or have any ideas on motherhood, I'd love to hear from you!

How to Stay Balanced, Healthy and Energized Away from Home

It's not easy to feel balanced, eat well and exercise while away from home, believe me I know; here are some ideas to guide you on your next adventure, business trip or family vacation. Enjoy!

1. Each morning set intentions for your day for health, food, fun, etc. An intention is a goal that you intend to achieve. It's easy to feel out of control and out of alignment when you are away from your routine. When you set daily intentions you are focusing on what you really want and desire instead of being pulled by the current of the day.

2. Breathe! It sounds so simple but most of us are completely unaware of our breath. Practice tuning into your breath throughout your day. (Take a yoga class to learn more about breathing.)

Johnn and Amanda Kauai, HI3. While dining out take a moment before you open the menu to ask your body what it is truly hungry for. Most menus are written with the intention to sell you something not to nourish your body, mind and spirit. Your body has all of the answers and all you have to do is ask and listen. For example, most restaurants bring bread to the table. If you do not want bread tell the server, "no bread please", before they bring it to your table that way you won't eat it.

4. Chew each bite 20 times. One of the biggest issues with traveling is constipation so slow down, breathe and chew your food. Digestion begins in the mouth. Chewing food thoroughly gives the digestive system a break.

5. Eat early and take a walk after dinner. You will sleep better and the movement will help digestion.

6. Be flexible. Sometimes when we travel we feel stressed and up-tight because we are out of our normal routine which affects our digestion. Try to be flexible and adventurous and let go of your expectations, don't beat yourself up if you ate desert or drank too much. Focus on the big picture and remember that tomorrow is a new beginning!

7. Drink tons of water! Try drinking at least 70 ounces of filtered water a day. Most of us are chronically dehydrated which causes fatigue, food cravings, stress, tension etc. So drink up!

Relax8. Eat where the locals eat. Shop at Farmer's Markets and eat simply. Your body will love you.

9. Relax and enjoy the new sights, sounds, smells and people.

10. Don't be afraid to skip a meal. Often times when we travel we feel run down and over stimulated and find ourselves on a crazy roller coaster ride trying to catch up. We come home exhausted needing a vacation from our vacation. You can skip a meal and exercise, meditate, breathe or nap instead of eating. This will rejuvenate you!

Based on years of world travel!

grapeseed extract1. Grapefruit Seed extract otherwise known as Defense Plus. This stuff absolutely rocks! I used it in India and never got sick once! Have you ever heard anyone say that they didn't get sick in India? It helps fight bacteria and germs. Find it at your health food store.

2. Thieves essential oil made by www.youngliving.com. I found Thieves the year I taught kids K-8 yoga and it saved my life. I never got sick! I use it every single time I board a plane and when I feel like I am catching a bug. Thieves oil is a blend of essential oils inspired by the thieves who robbed dead bodies during the Plague. It is the best and it smells like cinnamon, clove, eucalyptus and rosemary. A little bit goes a long way!

Burts Bees3. Burt's Bees Beeswax Lip Balm soothes dry lips like no other. Perfect when you're out experiencing Mother Nature's glory and you want extra protection.

4. Dr. Bronner's Organic Biodegradable Peppermint Soap keeps your body clean and fresh. You can even wash your clothes with it!

5. Snacks like Lara bar's, Nectar bars, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, raisins, apples, raw cacao, hemp seeds, and green powders like spirulina and blue green algae (add to water) help keep your energy up when you've got a lot of ground to cover in a day.

6. Herbal teas like ginger to help with digestion, chamomile to help you sleep, green to get you going and peppermint to soothe your belly.

7. Packets of Emergen-C (powdered vitamin C with extra B-vitamins and minerals.)

8. Sun hat, sunscreen, and aloe vera in case you burn.

Journaling9. Journal and pens to record all of your thoughts, insights and adventures.

7 Ways to Be Green and .... Save Money this Summer!

7 Ways to Be Green and.... Save Money!

Market1. Shop your local farmer's market each week for fresh, local and organic real food from the earth!

2. Put a face to your food! Get to know your farmer and ask if they have a CSA program (community supported agriculture.) If yes, sign up! I love my CSA. Each spring, I graciously send them a nominal fee ($250) which gives me 18 weeks of delicious and nutritious locally grown organic food! This is the way to go! You can't buy a month's worth of organic, local, seasonal food at your local grocer for less than $250 a month! Check out this site to find your local market http://www.localharvest.org/

3. Help your wallet and your waistline by growing your own food. For 10 cents worth of seeds, you can grow more than a dollar's worth of produce. Start with a small planter of herbs or tomatoes. If you're feeling more adventurous, invest in an Earth Box.. Or, do it up right and have the experts at Teich Garden Systems set you up with some raised beds.

4. Join Slow Food USA, whose motto/mission/philosophy is: "Slow Food is good, clean and fair food. We believe that the food we eat should taste good; that it should be produced in a clean way that does not harm the environment, animal welfare or our health; and that food producers should receive fair compensation for their work, and that all people should have access to this good and clean food."

Market5. Eat mindfully and be aware and conscious of the food you consume. Ask yourself: Where did my food come from? Was this animal treated fairly? Is my food organic or are there hundreds of harmful pesticides sprayed on my food? How many miles did my food travel from the earth to my plate? If you're eating a coconut or pineapple it could have traveled more than 2,000 miles to get to your plate!

6. Be grateful for your food. Take a few minutes when you sit down to eat and enjoy a few deep breaths with your eyes opened or closed and connect with your food. Give thanks to the rain, sun, soil and all of the hands that made your meal possible from the farmer, to the trucker to to the produce manager and the store checker. Chew slowly and mindfully.

7. Try a 30 Day Eat Local Challenge this September. I am interested in leading a group in a eat local challenge. Are you interested? Let's do it! Read more about being a localvore here (http://www.locavores.com/.)
